Samuel Carr

 

Transferred from Millbank Prison to Parkhurst Prison  -- 26/03/1850 -- age 17

Occupation:  Piecer in Factory (presumably a cotton factory)

Convicted at Manchester Sessions  -- 23/10/1849 for Larceny

Sentenced to 7 years transportation

He was single, could read (imperfectly) but could not write

Gaoler's Report at Parkhurst indicates that he had quite a few previous convictions

4 for Vagrancy, 2 for Larceny and 2 under the Juvenile Offenders Act (unspecified)

He embarked on the "Equestrian" for Van Diemen's Land on 19/08/1852 and arrived in Hobart

on 16/12/1852 and treated as an "Exile", that is, he was more or less free to come and go as he chose 

but unable to return to England until his 7 years had been completed.

Samuel may have married Eliza Donavan in Tasmania (yet to be verified)

He married Sarah Jane Hilliard at Geelong November 8th 1873

Children:

Sarah Jane Carr born 24th January 1872

Elizabeth Kate Carr born 25th Jan 1875

Mary Ann Carr born 1877. She died from suffocation while in bed with her mother 1877

Samuel's wife Sarah Jane Carr dies 1878 from Exposure (inquest held)

Samuel arrives at local jail with a coffee for Sarah, expecting that she had been locked up for drunkenness.

Instead finds out that she was found dead on the road having fallen on her way home.

1878 Samuel dies Geelong hospital aged 47 heart disease

Samuel's children, Elizabeth, Sarah and half brother Edmund go before the court as neglected children.

All children are sent to Industrial schools until they are 15. Girls to one school and the boy to another

They never saw their half brother Edmund again.
