William was born on March 29th, 1905 in Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland and his baptism took place there on April 2nd, 1905 conducted by priest John O' Donoghue.1   His godfather was John Connolly and his godmother was Catherine Whelan.  William's father was Richard O'Keeffe and his mother was Ellen Whelan.  His paternal grandparents were William O'Keeffe and Catherine Curtin; his maternal grandparents were Maurice Whelan and Mary Manning. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Maurice, Richard, Mary and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the five children.
