Joseph was born on December 25th, 1849.  Joseph's father was William Carr and his mother was Sarah McCarthy.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mc Carthy and Catherine Desmond. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, Francis, James, William, Mary, Ellen and Mary (2).  He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.
