John was born on November 17th, 1838.  John's father was William Carr and his mother was Sarah McCarthy.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mc Carthy and Catherine Desmond. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Joseph, Francis, James, William, Mary, Ellen and Mary (2).  He was the oldest of the nine children.
