Ellen was born on January 27th, 1845.  Ellen's father was William Carr and her mother was Sarah McCarthy.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mc Carthy and Catherine Desmond. She had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Richard, Joseph, Francis, James, William, Mary and Mary (2).  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
